The Challenge

The Challenge

Le défi

Azzurri Soccer League’s existing field lighting system relied on 2014-era halogen fixtures that were approaching the end of their expected product life. The aging system provided limited nighttime illumination, with readings ranging from only 12–22 foot-candles (FC), while consuming approximately 55,680 watts across 68 fixtures.

The system was also limited to illuminating a single FIFA-side field, creating an opportunity to improve both field coverage and lighting performance while reducing the substantial energy demands of the existing installation.

Azzurri needed a modern lighting solution capable of delivering brighter, more consistent illumination with greater efficiency, while enhancing the nighttime experience for players and spectators.

The existing lighting system at Serta Simmons’ Vaughan manufacturing facility consisted of 4 ft, 6-lamp LED T5 ballasted fixtures that had been retrofitted in 2019 — converting from 54W fluorescent lamps to 25.5W LED T5 replacements.

While the initial upgrade improved efficiency, ongoing lamp and ballast replacements (4-lamp and 2-lamp, 347V) had become frequent and costly, impacting both maintenance and lighting consistency across the plant.

To meet current production and inspection requirements, Serta Simmons needed a more reliable, high-performance lighting solution capable of achieving 400 lux throughout the general manufacturing area and up to 780 lux in quality inspection zones — all while reducing energy use and maintenance downtime.

Using a detailed lighting schematic and layout developed by Reno Lighting, the team designed a system optimized for uniformity, performance, and long-term dependability.

To meet Serta Simmons’ efficiency and performance goals, Reno Lighting implemented a customized lighting upgrade using R3 and R4 Linear High Bay fixtures equipped with occupancy and daylight sensors. This smart system delivers an estimated $35,000 in annual electrical savings and an additional $2,500 per year in maintenance savings over the lifespan of the fixtures. With an ROI of 4.75 years, the project also maximized available Save on Energy (IESO) instant discounts, further enhancing overall cost efficiency.

A detailed implementation plan ensured the project was completed safely, on time, and on budget — providing Serta Simmons with a high-performance, energy-efficient lighting solution that meets all targeted lux levels while supporting long-term reliability and operational savings.

A detailed implementation plan ensured the project was completed safely, on time, and on budget — providing Serta Simmons with a high-performance, energy-efficient lighting solution that meets all targeted lux levels while supporting long-term reliability and operational savings.
